Picket Civitas Institute’s Training for School Board Members!
WHEN: Thursday, April 14 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM
11:00 AM – Teach-In on right-wing money influence, Tea Party, Art Pope, Koch Brother and the rising tide of racism across the country.
...
12:00 NOON - RALLY
WHERE: WS/FC Schools Education Building
4801 Bethania Station Road
Winston-Salem, NC
WHO: NAACP and Statewide Partners
HOW: Supporters of public education will gather before 9:30 AM on Thursday, April 14 to set-up for a picket at the school system’s building on Bethania Station Road. We will hold a rally at 12:00 noon. If you can only come for part of the day, COME TO THE RALLY AT 12:00 NOON!
WHY: Civitas is an ideologically and profit-driven right-wing think tank, funded and directed Art Pope, one of the most influential, millionaire Tea Party funders in the United States. They have an agenda to dismantle public education through privatization and further re-segregation. Between three Tea Party organizations that Pope supports – Americans for Prosperity, Real Jobs NC and Civitas – Pope poured $2.2 million into the recent NC legislative election, which resulted in the right-wing take-over the NC General Assembly. The Civitas Institute has no place training our school system on budget cuts. Pope is responsible for 90% of all funding for all major right-wing think tanks in North Carolina!
CIVITAS WILL UNDOUBTEDLY SUPPORT BUDGET CUTS ON THE BACKS OF THE POOR, BLACK AND LATINO SCHOOLS, CHILDREN AND COMMUNITIES
CONTACT: Atty. Wayne Patterson (336-995-3072) Stephen Hairston (336-813-7311) or Rob Stephens (336-577-9335, robstephens50@gmail.com) for more information on the picket and rides to the location.
Stopping Budget Cuts: A Teach-In for the Fed-Up
Thursday, April 14 · 6:30pm - 8:30pm
NCCU Student Union, 507 Nelson St, Durham, NC
For three years we've been told to tighten our belts: to go without supplies in our schools, to pay more tuition for college, and to do without the services our communities need. Meanwhile the General Assembly is passing the budget savings on to the wealthy by lowering corporate taxes. There's more going on than "balancing the budget" and it's time for some real talk about the budget. Join People's Durham, leaders from the NCCU student government, and Southerners on New Ground (SONG) as we explore the REAL causes behind the budget cuts.
Chapel Hill Town Council gets an earful about collective bargaining, the Sanitation 2 and preserving Northside
Petitions from the community about the Sanitation 2, collective bargaining, and preserving the historic Northside community lasted for over an hour at Monday's Town Council meeting. Speakers gave many different perspectives and all came to similar conclusions about how Town Council needs to take action for working people, families, and longtime residents of Chapel Hill, as opposed to developers and corporations. Speakers specifically asked for the rehiring of Clyde Clark and Kerry Bigelow, and for a freeze on demolitions and new construction in Northside to protect affordable housing.

Save Our Schools March & National Call to Action!
July 28-31, 2011 in Washington, D.C. and around the country
We’re putting the Public back in public schools!
We, a collection of people from all walks of life and every corner of this nation, embody a mixture of ideas and opinions regarding how we can improve educational opportunities for all children. We stand united by one belief – it’s time for teachers and parents to organize and reclaim control of our schools.
As concerned citizens, we demand an end to the destructive policies and rhetoric that have eroded confidence in our public schools, demoralized teachers, and reduced the education of too many of our children to nothing more than test preparation.
A well-educated society is essential to the future of the United States of America. Our students must have access to a fully funded, world-class public education system, and it is our responsibility to hold our government accountable for providing the means to achieve it. Please join us!
House vote to end fair union elections Wednesday
Anti-worker legislators in the House are about to make it much more difficult for railway and airline employees to form unions.
House Transportation Chairman John Mica – who has taken more than $620,000 in campaign contributions from the airline industry – quietly slipped a provision into FAA reauthorization legislation that would count non-voters as "no" voters in union elections.1
So even if there are more "yes" votes than "no" votes, the "yeses" could still lose. Can you think of any other election that works that way?
It's as outrageous as it is shamefully undemocratic. Congress could vote on the provision as soon as WEDNESDAY – we need to make sure they know Americans are actually paying attention!
Tell your representative: The only votes that should count are votes that are actually cast!
Last year, the National Mediation Board established rules based on fundamental fairness and democratic principles for workers in the rail and airline industry. Now, those workers have the right to vote "yes" for a union or "no" against it.
Think how every vote you've participated in works – from PTA meetings to Congressional elections. All the ballots are counted, and whichever side gets the majority of votes wins. Simple. Fair. Democratic.
But Rep. John Mica (R-FL) is trying to change all that. Instead of allowing those who participate to decide the election, Rep. Mica wants to require super-majority participation and assign meaning to votes that aren't cast.
We know what will happen if he's successful. Fraud. Worker intimidation.
Just think if members of Congress needed a majority of ALL constituents to get elected!
A Cornell University study found unscrupulous employers use this twisted logic to suppress worker votes under the proposed system.2 So it's critical that we stop anti-worker lawmakers from turning back the clock on progress.
Remember – the vote could come as soon as WEDNESDAY – your representative needs to hear from you TODAY!
Urge your representative to preserve fair elections. Send your message now, before they vote!
Thanks for all that you do for workers' rights.

Town Council Debates the Sanitation 2
Monday March 28 @ 630pm
Update:
The Town won't be debating this question publicly, but rather in executive session. We still need people to come out though and make short speeches in support! (from Scott Williams)
previous post:
Tomorrow at the Town Council the Council members will be discussing the case as the council in front of the public for the first time!
We need every supporter to come out tomorrow. We are asking everyone to make a short speech (around 3 minutes) to the Council to show your support for the Sanitation 2, as well as the efforts to stop the gentrification of the Northside neighborhood.
We hope to have 50 or more people come out, and we encourage everyone to make your voice heard and speak to the council.
If you have any questions, contact Scott Williams at
